Ask Kat - The New York Native Therapist

Q: I've enjoyed NYNatives posts about dogs because when I moved here I was worried about having my dog in an apartment. Since then I've come to learn about dog parks, etc. Still occasionally I get yelled at for having my dog off leash in Central Park in the mornings. Isn't that allowed?! Thx, Jennifer

Ask Kat: Hi Jennifer, Yes!  Dogs are permitted to be off leash in most of the city parks from 9.00 p.m. to 9.00 a.m.  In spring and summer the parks become more crowded with runners, cyclists, strollers, and sunbathers so may be best to keep to areas where dogs are in packs.  And that way you're also surrounded by dog owners.  They (dog owners) can also be unfair or unpredictable in their expectations but generally more supportive if your dog interrupts their path.  Regardless, as with life, don't let the grumpy, miserable and entitled folks spoil your outings.

Q: I don't know if you saw the article in the New York times magazine on kid psychopaths? Now I'm freaked out because my wife and I have been having difficulty with our eight year old daughter who is exceptionally temperamental. We hadn't considered therapy but maybe we should?  Thanks, Chris

As Kat: Chris, I did see and read the article.  For others who may not have, here is the link for reference: NYTimes  I can appreciate your concerns, but as the article is careful to note, behavioral challenges are absolutely not (necessarily) predictive of psychopathology.  There can be many, many reasons and explanations for children who may be  acting out.  That aside, if you and your wife and your daughter are struggling to maintain a functional dynamic, beyond what you may sense is usual or to be expected, I would consider looking into options for therapy.  Very often addressing how the family operates can be invaluable regardless, and will hopefully provide some insight into your daughter's behavior.

Q: While everyone seems to get happier in the warmer months, for some reason I get the blues? I don't know, misery loves company? Alice

As Kat: Hi Alice, Sorry to hear you've got the blues and of course it's even worse if everyone else's mood is seemingly improving. I'd venture to guess your feeling down has less to do with weather and is maybe associated with your experience and expectations of the warmer months. Are there activities you enjoy more or less? Any family or social events or traditions coming up that are cause for angst? Be sure to honor and respect where you're at, and then see if you can discover a few delights.  This weeks Time Out New York has a spread on weekend getaways that could be helpful to inspire some ideas.
