NY Natives Musings
Jazz Foundation of America's Great Night in Harlem 2012
Can I just say: WOW!
It was my first time to the legendary Apollo Theater, it was the night the world said goodbye to the extraordinary Donna Summer and I had the privilege of a Press Pass to this incredible event benefiting the outstanding Jazz musicians that have made my life a better place to be with their many talents.
Truck Nuts in the Tri-State!
I always thought that part of the "social contract" for folks in the tri-state area was that we paid more for everything from taxes to groceries but in exchange we got to avoid some of the socio-cultural pathologies of much of the rest of the country.
But for the second time now in a week, crossing the GW Bridge back into the city I have unfortunately been behind a flatbed (invariably a Chevy or Ford) sporting what my cursory research has taught me are called "truck nuts" (seemingly quite popular in the south).
Bet You Wish You had a Terrace!
Ok- that is a mean title to this little musing about how lucky I am to have a fabulous outdoor space in NYC. It wasn't always so. I once lived in Gotham senza terazzo... but no longer. After a brief schooling stint upstate we realized that there is nothing quite so lovely as being able to test the temperature for real in the morning, urban gardening in fine weather and grilling all year long!
I highly recommend you have your children or young relatives get those little hands dirty and do the heavy lifting for you!
AMAZING Baked Donuts ... for real
I love food and I try to keep it healthy as much as possible. Well, ok I don't keep it healthy all the time. As I sit here writing this piece, I have a Reese's Piece's and Hersey bar sitting on my book shelf... And I had a brownie after I had pasta for dinner.
Tax Refund or Tax Audit - Wait it Out at the Loews Regency!
What do we have, if we do not have humor?
Levity is certainly my "go-to" in times of panic and disaster. At this time of year while most of us are sitting on pins and needles awaiting our fate from the tax gods, the oh-so-witty Loews Regency has got us covered!
Gracious Home Never Says NO!
During the course of my life I have been shopping, browsing and being pushed in a stroller though Gracious Home. Anything and everything you could ever want for your home is in the endless aisles of Gracious Home.
Mosaic Man Rocks! Go Get Some!
If you've lived in NYC for any length of time or even just visited the village - you have certainly seen the amazingly colorful and fantastic mosaics that appear at every turn between 8th Street and Broadway, through Astor place, across Cooper Square in front of Cooper Union and St. Marks place, from third Ave to Avenue A, down Avenue A to 4th Street, up 4th Street to Bowery and back to the cube on 8th street. That, my friends ... is the "Mosaic Trail."
DEATH by Mr. Softee
We have Mr. Softee-ed with the best of them!
Those tell-tale jingles, those hordes of salivating children... we get it, we lined up after school, dripped ice- cream down our arms in the warm months. That horrible jingle is a seasonal calling ... horrible as it is, it heralds the Spring- the sunshine and outdoor play.
Well, never in all of our imaginings did we think ... could we conceive, that one could be killed- YES, run over by Mr. Softee. And not just a speeding Softee truck heading back to the garage... oh no., jingle bells playing and all!
Why has Rachael Ray Entered My Psyche?
Why why why has Rachael Ray entered my psyche?
I am not joking. I have absolutely no reason to know who she is or think about anything she does. But one day her magazine started arriving at my apartment. It was addressed to me. It was un-solicited. It was free. I am always willing to peruse the weird random stuff I receive in the mail while on the treadmill, so off it went to the gym with me one day.
