East Village Memory Lane
I spent my President's Day morning walking with a new friend through a neighborhood I knew intimately as a rebellious young kid.
Now nearly un-recognizeable with trendy East Village cafes on the corners and chic lounges and oyster bars where squats and community gardens once sheltered and fed a wild brood of hardcore kids, skinheads and crusty punk rockers.
There is an amazing history down there- largely forgotten, some parts overlooked or ignored. My re-introduction to what is left and the community that has stepped in where what I knew left off, is fraught with nostalgia and a degree of excitement.
So much of my life has changed since those days, and yet so much of what I consider "me" remains just exactly the same as it was back then. My hair looks better.
I love it when life makes you cross paths with your former steps. Even if it hurts sometimes, it always seems worth it.
